Fresh Farm to Market Every Week
During our 2020/21 produce season we were able to rescue 32 million pounds of fresh produce, of that over 5 million pounds and 40 varieties were distributed through our P.O.W.W.O.W. program. This makes a grand total of over 76,000 fresh nutritious produce boxes distributed to families across Arizona.
We will release our 9th season calendar in September of 2022
The Borderlands P,O.W.W.O.W. program operates during our produce season, typically November through August. Every week, usually on Saturdays, P.O.W.W.O.W. host sites are held in cities around Arizona. These sites are hosted by community organizations (churches, civic organizations, schools and universities.) Visit any of our P.O.W.W.O.W. sites and leave with up to 70 lbs of fresh produce, all just for a contribution of $15. Find a P.O.W.W.O.W. site close to you.
All of the produce distributed at each our weekly markets was initially rescued by us, Borderlands. This produce comes directly from the warehouses of produce distributors, with a majority of it having been processed for the landfill simply because the distributors were unable to market it. Every season, this rescued produce, distributed through our P.O.W.W.O.W. program accounts for over 4 million healthy meal supplements!
All of Borderlands programs are made available to not only community members but also registered non-profit organizations. Our P.O.W.W.O.W. After Hours program works with area non-profit organizations who, once registered with Borderlands, are able to pick-up up to 10 boxes of each variety of remaining produce. P.O.W.W.O.W. After Hours is only open at the completion of each of our weekly sites (after our supporters have had a chance to shop.)
Take a moment to check out our produce calendar, this is where we'll provide a weekly update as to where sites are going to be, and, when possible, what produce may be available. All produce is available on a first come basis, try to arrive early.
When you arrive to the distribution site find the registration table, at which you will be able to make your $15 cash contribution. Now you are ready to shop!
At each site we typically provide a list of the quantities of each item you can shop for, this is to ensure that everyone receives the same mix of produce. You are welcome to opt out of an item, however substitutes are not offered.
Are you new to the P.O.W.W.O.W. program or do you have questions event though you frequent our distribution locations? Please reach us at infobpr@borderlandsfoodbank.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Borderlands Produce Rescue is unable to rescue the amount of varieties in the summer especially, in August through October, compared to the fall and winter. Our produce distribution is very much linked to the seasonal produce schedule. We host our Pop-Up Markets during September and October with one market(s) weekly rotating between Metro Phoenix and Metro Tucson.
We are no longer requiring you have a Borderlands' P.O.W.W.O.W. ID card to participate, however we do urge you to sign up for our newsletter to be kept updated as to changes and market availability in your area.
If you have boxes you would like to donate to us, we would welcome that. Each Borderlands' P.O.W.W.O.W. location will typically have boxes to use.
No, you are not required to take all quantities or varieties offered. However, you will be unable to substitute items for other items.
No substitutions are not allowed so all supporters can benefit.
We only accept cash contributions at P.O.W.W.O.W. markets. You can order online using your PayPal, or credit/debit card through our Drive Up and Take Away Service.
Subscribe to our weekly newsletter, visit our Facebook page or click here every late Thursday or Friday afternoon for varieties offered.
November-March, 8am – 11am (Hours May Vary). April-May, 7am – 10am. June-October , 6-9am. Please view the schedule for locations and hours. Hours may vary at each distribution location.
It is at your discretion, however it is first come first serve. If a location runs out of produce we will leave the location early.
Often the produce we rescue IS organic, however we do not list this as we may rescue 2-3 different brands of the same produce item. We can not promise that a location will get a certain type of variety.
Yes, anyone may request perished produce for composting at the distribution location. Please speak to the head honcho of the market for more questions. Simply ask if there is "perished" produce available and you will get what we have.
