Redistributing Produce to Curb Food Waste
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, over 7 billion pounds of produce comes through the Nogales, AZ Port of Entry with Mexico every year. That's a lot of produce! And, it's a lot of produce that often goes to waste.
At Borderlands Produce Rescue, we are committed to not only curbing food waste, but also saving mother earth. To that end, we have several programs that allow for both individuals and organizations to take part in our produce rescue efforts.
One of the biggest obstacles we face in rescuing more produce each year is finding new and innovative uses for the produce we rescue. Our Direct Client Distribution allows for everyday individuals to stop by the Borderlands Nogales warehouse to access fresh produce. Supporters are provided with an entire shopping cart full of produce for a minimum $5 contribution.

Every Monday, agencies are able to pick-up boxes of produce at our Nogales, AZ warehouse. This is our international distribution program open to small organizations in Arizona and Sonora Mexico. For agency pick-up you must fill out an application when you arrive at the warehouse.

Borderlands' P.O.W.W.O.W. program partners with area non-profit and community organizations, or schools, to host weekly community market locations. At each location you can get an up to 70lb box of rescued produce for a minimum contribution of $15.

As part of our Arizona Distribution program we allow registered non-profit organizations to pick-up boxes of produce, at the end of our Borderlands' P.O.W.W.O.W. market locations. Qualifying non-profits are able to pick-up up to 10 boxes of each remaining variety of produce.

Each year we donate millions of pounds of fresh produce to food banks around the country. If the produce we rescue has the shelf-life to travel, we reach out to our network of food serving agencies and they send a truck to pick-up a 40,000lbs of one variety.
